Overview

The country office is located in Dakar, and supported by a sub office in Ziguinchor (Casamance), in Kaolack and a WFP monitoring unit in Tambacounda.

Team

The WFP Logistics team in Senegal consists of six staff members.

Activities
Port operations

The port of Dakar is the main entry point for commodities purchased on the international market and container terminal management is carried out by Dubai Ports World.

Surface transport

Deliveries are carried out by private transporters, using trucks. Major cities, towns, warehouses and advanced delivery points are accessible via road. The main route connecting Kaolack and Tambacounda is in poor condition but is in the process of being rehabilitated by a private European contractor. Final distribution points are usually easily accessible via dirt tracks. In 2009, difficulties were encountered in identifying transporters for deliveries in Ranerou, in the Matam region, due to poor track conditions.

Rail

WFP does not employ rail services in Senegal.

Aviation

There are currently no aviation services in Senegal.

Other WFP Logistics Services

WFP provides particular support to the Cellule de Lutte contre la Malnutrition (CLM) and Micronutrient Initiative (MI), both partners in the Iodized Salt project. WFP is in charge of all tenders, port formalities and transit procedures and deliveries.
