From inception, WFP UNHAS chartered aircraft have transported more than 2.2 million humanitarian passengers. UNHAS organizes on average, the transport of 26,700 humanitarian passengers per month to the remotest parts of the globe where local capacity is lacking or when local operators do not meet air safety requirements. Without air service, it is impossible for humanitarian workers to access vulnerable people or deliver medicines and urgent supplies on time when emergencies occur.

From Afghanistan to Sudan and from Central African Republic to Somalia we look at the needs and our commitment is everywhere the same - get aid workers to their work, carry Donors to observe the effect and transport journalists to witness the dynamics of of humanitarian world. The transported passengers are 60 percent from UN agencies, 30 percent NGO passengers and 10 percent from the Media and Donor communities.

Over the years, WFP Aviation has developed the capacity and expertise to manage safe and reliable air services for the humanitarian community transporting aid workers, donors and media. In recognition of this, WFP received the mandate from the High Level Committee on Management (HLCM) in 2003 to provide air transport services to the UN Humanitarian Agencies and humanitarian community. As a result, the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) was launched.
